Just starting to play, you are a forward or you are a back - what are the boot consideration?

The major boot brands have rugby specific boots which are specifically designed to support rugby players. Rugby boots are designed for power, traction, and protection during high-contact, muddy conditions, whereas football (soccer) boots prioritize speed, agility, and precise ball control.

The key difference between football boots and rugby boots is the stud configuration, ankle support and material durability. Rugby boots generally feature a wider, more robust construction.

In Thailand, the moulded studs or firm ground boots are favored. Generally playing fields have a sand base and drainage is good. Also more rugby is being played on artificial turf, where moulded studs are usually required.

The key physical differences to consider when buying a rugby boot or a football boot are:

Ankle Cut and Support

Rugby boots tend to have a higher ankle cut to offer greater support and stability during pushing in scrums and for added protection against impact.

Football boots are mostly low cut to maximize the ankle's range of motion for better agility and rapid nimble movement

Heel Structure

Rugby boots often feature raised heel to improve stability and power transfer, acting as a wedge to push forward.

Football boots are usually flat soled to facilitate quick movement and better, close control dribbling.

Buying Considerations based on Position

Forwards need rugby specific boots for maximum traction, protection and a raised heel. Backs can wear lighter, low cut boots for improved speed and kicking precision.
